About Horsehae

Our soil is clean, so is our hay:
Tri-Forage Horsehae!

The process

Horsehae is made from our best forage fields only and is grown in soil that is not degraded by chloride containing fertilizers. We apply our extensive knowledge of crop management to ensuring that the hay is cut, raked and baled when at the peak of its nutritional benefit. Horsehae is exposed to the weather risk for 24 hours at the most, often for a much shorter period. Horsehae is baled when it is half dry which helps to prevent the valuable leaves breaking during baling.

photo The natural wilted grass bales are hydraulically compressed to one third of their original size.

The baling process allows no heating of the forage to take place. The bales are pressed down to less than half their size and, within seconds, hermetically sealed in double plastic bags. The sealed bags create a controlled environment that preserves the palatability and feeding value of the forage. The lack of heating during and after packaging creates no opportunity for mould spores to proliferate. Starting with very clean hay and processing when damp in vacuum sealed bags allows the forage to ferment slightly thus inhibiting mould growth.

The Benefits

bullet Feeding Horsehae to coughing horses results in a marked improvement in their respiratory health in only a matter of days. See our product Testimonials and Research.
bullet Horsehae can assist in the reduction of respiratory disease without the use of drugs and chemical additives, using a purely natural, healthy and clean product.
bullet Horsehae assists in maintaining good respiratory health and condition.
bullet "Poor doers" and "fussy feeders" respond well to being fed Horsehae.
bullet Use of only best hay crops, particular forage mixes and rigid processing methods ensures consistency of the product from bag to bag and year to year.
bullet Horsehae closely resembles the natural diet of horses, is very palatable and is much more easily digested than hay.
bullet Horsehae uses the total plant, providing the horse with all the benefits of fresh forage all year round.
bullet Each mouthful must be pulled from the net or rack, thus helping to prevent stable boredom by occupying the horse.
bullet Horsehae is much more nutritious than hay so that a horse can be kept in better health and condition while at the same time allowing for a substantial reduction in the amount of expensive 'hard feed' in their diet.
bullet There is no wastage in feeding.
bullet Legume free grass mix and alfalfa mix available for horses with legume and grass related allergies.
bullet Similar cost to conventional feeding of stabled horses.
bullet Horsehae is very beneficial in putting on and keeping on weight.

Handling and Storage

Horsehae will keep for 16 months or more provided the bags remain airtight. Because of the anaerobic conditions of packaging, Horsehae does not deteriorate at all over this time.

photo Horsehae is guaranteed of uniform quality, is easy to transport and handle, occupies approximately one-third the space of a bale of hay and because of the way it is processed and packaged, keeps for 16 months or more.

Store out of the sun, on a smooth surface and not against a rough wall. Do not store Horsehae on waste straw or anything that will attract vermin that could gnaw the bags. Since Horsehae is in plastic bags it is a perishable feed. Feeding damaged bags could cause digestive problems in your horse.

Feeding Horsehae

For the majority of horse and pony owners, feeding Horsehae is simple and economic. Start by working up to 1 to 1.5 kg per 100 kg (1 to 1.5 lbs. per 100 lbs.) of body weight over a period of a week or 10 days. This is the daily ration which should be given in three feeds if possible. Adjust the amount to maintain condition (this depends on the animal's food conversion efficiency and the amount of work it is doing). Never feed more than is necessary to maintain body weight and condition.

Tri-Forage Horsehae has a sweet, rich aroma unlike any other hay. The succulent taste inspires even the worst feeder. photo

Horses from which a higher performance is expected will require an energy supplement in the form of oats, or barley etc. If the higher protein Horsehae is fed then the supplementary feed would vary from 2 kg (4.5 lbs.) oats per day for Eventers to 5 kg (11 lbs.) or 6 kg (13lbs.) for steeple chasers and race-horses. Alfalfa Horsehae is particularly good for this type of animal as it provides sufficient fibre, is high in protein, and also high in calcium.

As a rule of thumb guide it is recommended that you feed the same weight of Horsehae as you would normally feed hay, but cut the hard feed down to half to compensate for the higher nutrition in Horsehae compared with hay. Where people do not reduce their hard feed a very "hot" horse is usually the result!

Special mention should be made of brood mares and foals. A pregnant mare with no foal at foot requires the same level of feed as a non-pregnant mare until the last stages of the pregnancy. Care must be taken to keep her in good condition but not fat. When suckling she must have a highly nutritious ration such as the high protein alfalfa Horsehae. The foal should start eating Horsehae at about two weeks. There is evidence that such foals do much better than those on traditional feed.
